JEREMIAH LADD BLAKE

Born in Orange, New Hampshire, Nov. 18, 1833; when he was still quite young his parents, John and Ruth LADD BLAKE, moved to Pittsfield, N.H., which was his father’s native town. It was here and in the adjoining town of Epsom that Jeremiah learned the saddler’s trade. He was of English descent, the great great grandson of Joshua BLAKE of Hampston Falls, New Hampshire, whose ancestor is said to have been named Jasper BLAKE who came from England in 1650.
On July 6, 1852, Jeremiah sailed from New York City on the steamer “Prometheus”, which arrived in California August 2, 1852. After several days in San Francisco, he went to Petaluma in Sonoma County where he engaged in the lumber business. In March of 1853, he went to Tomales Bay, took up land and built a cabin which served as a combined dwelling and saddle factory. He began farming in 1854, and began planting fruit trees in 1856. In 1860 he visited his old home in the East, traveling by steamer via the Isthmus. In 1862 he bought 177 acres. He manufactured saddles until 1866, then farmed and engaged in the dairy business. He made a second trip back East in 1866, and on October 2, 1866 he married Miss Frances Moore of Tomales in Petaluma, Sonoma County; she was born in May, 1846, in Michigan.
